The usage of Acyclovir is recommended to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; chickenpox, and herpes zoster (shingles). It decreases pain and speed the healing of sores, or itching but it does not cure herpes infections. Also acyclovir can help in usage when you want to prevent the infection from coming back. Acyclovir also treats shingles and chickenpox infections. It works by stopping the spread of the herpes virus in the body. Sometimes this medication is prescribed for other uses. How Taken: Acyclovir comes as a tablet, a capsule, and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It recommended following the directions on the prescription label. Acyclovir tablets or capsules should be taken by mouth. With a full glass of water swallow the tablet (the capsule). Take your doses at regular intervals, with or without food. Take acyclovir exactly as directed. Take acyclovir until you finish the prescription, even if you feel better. If you stop taking acyclovir too soon or skip doses, your infection may not be completely treated or may become more difficult to treat. Contact your pediatrician or health professional if you are going to treat child with Acyclovir because special care may be needed for use of this medicine for children.
Warnings Precautions: Tell your doctor if you are allergenic to Acyclovir. Patients with renal impairment need dosage adjustments. Warning should also be exercised to patients who receiving potentially nephrotoxic agents (this may increase the risk of renal dysfunction and/or the risk of reversible central nervous system symptoms such as those that have been reported in patients treated with intravenous acyclovir). Consult with a physician if any adverse reaction occurs. Also if the patient become pregnant or intend to become pregnant, or the patient intend to breastfeed while taking orally administered Acyclovir, or they have any other questions the patient should tell all this to her doctor.
Herpes Zoster: Patients should be advised to initiate treatment as soon as possible after a diagnosis of herpes zoster. There are no data on treatment initiated more than 72 hours after onset of the zoster rash.
Genital Herpes Infections: Acyclovir is not a cure for genital herpes. You should know that genital herpes can be spread through sexual contact even if you don't have blisters or other symptoms and possibly even if you are taking acyclovir. Consult your doctor for more information.
Chickenpox: Chickenpox in otherwise healthy children is usually a self-limited disease of mild to moderate severity. Adolescents and adults tend to have more severe disease. Treatment was initiated within 24 hours of the typical chickenpox rash in the controlled studies, and there is no information regarding the effects of treatment begun later in the disease course.
Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. Do not take double or extra doses. Take only that dose that was prescribed for you.
Side Effects: Very important to not increase dose that you are taking all side effects depend upon it. You should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible if you have any side effects: skin rash or hives, stomach pain, tremor, confusion or hallucinations, increased thirst, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth, reduced amount of urine passed, seizures, unusual weakness or tiredness. There are some side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, increased sensitivity to the sun, loss of appetite.
Storage: Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
